Teaching Journal 10

This internship experience changed my worries about my capabilities into beliefs about what I can and will do when I begin teaching. Over the course of ten weeks, I went from an unknown outsider to a contributing member of a tight knit community. I also developed a keen understanding of how creating classroom community and social growth. Under Tsai’s mentor-ship, I was able to test out theories, make mistakes and learn so much about how to foster a successful classroom community. I also witnessed how important it was for students to have a good space to take intellectual risks and feel supported by both their teacher and classmates.

During those week teaching, I find the game teaching is a good way for students pay attention to learning new things and reviewing what we had learned. I lead them to play Bingo and word flash card in Chinese. If they win the game, they can get price, a candy or a sharing time. I find they get more progress to remember Chinese words than before. But when play the game, the classroom discipline is not good, after playing games, they become more active and excited. I need to spend more time in class management. Everything has two sides, a good side and a bad side, What should I do?

One of my biggest area for growth was classroom and behavior management. I discovered it was difficult for me to address behavior problems because I was initially worried that the students would not like me, and therefore, not respect me. I have a student who has behavior problem, he always can not control himself, he can not focus on learning. If I ask him not to do that, he will become “crazy”. If he do not want to do something, I can stay with him to let him calm down, but i need to charge other students, I am not sure how to help him is better. My senior mentor talk with me about him,we worried about him, and is parents want us help him more,in order to letting him into class; whatever, we will try our best to help him.

This week is Halloween. We are looking forward it. Last week , we prepared the clothes that we would like to wear, I planed to dress up as a witch. Last Halloween, when I was an exchange student at Jacksonville State University, I was dress up as a ice princess. I hope this time I can have a different feeling. I also prepared a lot candy. We will have Halloween Night with my student’s families, I will trick-or-treating with children, we also toast marshmallows at the fire pit together. At my class, I teach my students a Halloween song in Chinese. They like this song very much.

I realized how important it was to find the delicate balance between friendship and leadership. I also realized that by trying to be the the student’s friends, it actually undermined their respect for me because they did not always take me seriously when I wanted to work. Firstly, I want to be their friends, I always remind them to do this , to do that. As a long time, they do not consider me as a teacher. Even they know how to tie their shoes, they pretend they can not, ask me to help them, they do not want to do anything by them self. Now I try to change my teaching approach, I need let them know how to respect other people.

One of the most valuable aspects of my field placement was being able to observe a phenomenal teacher in action. Not only did I learn from simple observing senior mentor, but i also had the opportunity to sit down with her and discuss any questions I had about teaching. This experience highlighted for me the importance of having a teacher-mentor at my first teaching job. Working with her also prepared me to communicate effectively and cooperatively with other teachers in the future. Especially co-teaching, the cooperation is important for it. Two teachers work together, mutual assistance is based. I am really appreciate with another teacher –Tsai.

I was assigned to co-teach 1st grade students in Madison Elementary School with a senior mentor. On my first day, I managed to remember names of all the kids in my class and gained familiarity with work protocol, routine procedure and life schedules. I quickly built up rapport with my students, who are so active and smart. Unlike the Chinese kids I have taught before, American kids are more creative and know how to express their own opinions. To meet their specific needs and expectations, I tried to adapt my teaching approach in my group with around 10 students to make it more fun and interactive, Sometimes I led them to play games in order to review knowledge points such as reading and writing the Chinese vowels “a” “o” “e” “i” “u”. I enjoy every minute in teaching.
